In the early 1800s a portion of present-day Chino Hills belonged to the San Gabriel Mission, California’s largest and wealthiest mission. In 1841 Antonio Maria Lugo was deeded 47,000 acres of land that he had worked on acquiring since 1810. He founded Rancho Santa Ana del Chino which he sold to his son-in-law Isaac Williams who lived on the land until 1864. In 1881, Richard Gird, founder of the neighboring city of Chino bought the land from Isaac Williams’ heirs. Up until the 1980s the land in Chino Hills was primarily used for agriculture.
