History

Like many neighboring cities Walnut’s written history begins with land grants. The first land grants issued in Walnut were to Ricardo Vejar and Ygnacio Palomares in 1837, to Jose de la Luz Linares in 1840, and to John Rowland and William Workman in 1842. Vejar and Palomares founded Ranch De San Jose, Linares founded Rancho De Los Nogales, and Rowland and Workman founded Rancho La Puente. Rowland and Workman’s land grant alone totaled 48,790 acres of land. The city of Walnut was named after Linares’s Rancho Los Nogales, Spanish for Ranch of the Walnut Trees, which along with Vejar’s Rancho San Jose included the eastern portion of present-day Walnut. In 1851 Rowland and Workman divided Rancho La Puente. Rowland took the eastern half which included the western portion of present-day Walnut. The city of Walnut was incorporated on January 19, 1959.

Location

The city of Walnut is situated on 8.9 square miles of land in the scenic Walnut Valley between the Puente Hills and the San Jose Hills mountain range. Walnut is located in the southeastern tip of Los Angeles County, providing residents with easy access to downtown Los Angeles, only 26 miles northwest of the city. Walnut is also close to major metropolitan centers in Orange County and San Bernardino County as well. Southern California’s deserts, beaches, and mountains are nearby. Walnut residents enjoy the benefit of living in a relaxed, semi-rural city but are near urban centers. Within the city itself are nine parks, 26 miles of equestrian and hiking trails, Mt. San Antonio College, and shopping centers.

Schools

Walnut’s public education is provided by two school districts within the city, the Walnut Valley Unified School District and Rowland Heights School District. Walnut Valley Unified is a top-ranked school district in California, recognized for its excellent academic programs and high standardized test scores. Five elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools from Walnut Valley Unified are located in Walnut. Rowland Unified, a leading school district in their region, prides itself on having the most California State Distinguished and Golden Bell Awards in its region. Two elementary schools from Rowland Unified are located in Walnut and residents attend the secondary schools in nearby cities.

Walnut’s private education is provided by four preschool/kindergarten schools, three elementary schools, and one Christian high school.

Walnut is home to Mt. San Antonio College, a premier community college in California. One of the largest community colleges in the state, Mt. SAC is recognized for its outstanding degree and certificate programs, its high student transfer rate to prestigious colleges, and its affordability. Also located in Walnut is Monterey Park College, a small private college offering four one-year degree programs and Shen Real Estate School, an even smaller private real estate school. Within 15 miles of the city’s center are seven colleges and universities, public and private. The colleges, in order of proximity to Walnut are California State Polytechnic University – Pomona, Devry Institute of Technology – Pomona, Azusa Pacific University, Citrus College, University of La Verne, Fullerton College, and Rio Hondo College.
