History

Present-day Rowland Heights was inhabited by Gabrelino Indians until 1771 when the San Gabriel Mission was established by Spanish explorers. Following Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1822, the Mexican government divided the large, wealthy mission and gave away or sold the land in pieces. In 1841 John Rowland and William Workman were given a land grant of 48,790 acres upon which they founded Rancho La Puente. Rowland Heights is named after John Rowland. In 1851 they divided their land in half; Rowland took the eastern half while Workman took the western half. After their deaths in the 1870s the two portions were sold to different developers. In the following decades the land was further subdivided and sold to many different owners who maintained the land for agriculture. However, in 1956 the San Gabriel Valley Planning Commission planned residential and commercial development of the area, initiating a building boom that continues today in Rowland Heights.

Location

Rowland Heights is an unincorporated community located on 9 square miles of land in the beautiful San Gabriel Valley. Rowland Heights is located in southeastern Los Angeles and borders Orange County. Rowland Heights is a quiet suburb, but its close proximity to downtown Los Angeles, only 23 miles away, and Orange and San Bernardino Counties gives residents easy access to urban centers. Beaches, the mountains, and the desert are also nearby. Within Rowland Heights are four parks, several popular restaurants, and various shopping centers

Schools

Rowland Heights’ public education is provided by Rowland Unified School District. Rowland Unified is a leading school district in its region. In addition, Rowland Unified offers adult and community education courses at a main campus in Rowland Heights and 20 other sites in the district.

Rowland Heights’ private education is provided by three preschool/kindergarten schools, one college prep middle/high school, and one elementary/secondary school.

Within 15 miles of Rowland Heights are seven major colleges and universities, public and private. The colleges, in order of proximity to Rowland Heights are Mt. San Antonio College, Fullerton College, California State Polytechnic University – Pomona, Devry Institute of Technology – Pomona, Rio Hondo College, Whittier College and Azusa Pacific University.
