History

Diamond Bar’s written history began on March 30, 1840 when Jose de la Luz Linares founded Rancho Los Nogales (Ranch of the Walnut Trees) on 4,340 acres of land, deeded to him by Governor Juan Alvarado. The Mexican land grant included the Brea Canyon and the Eastern Walnut Valley. After Vejar’s death in 1847, Ricardo Vejar, owner of the neighboring Rancho San Jose, bought all of Rancho Los Nogales over 10 years, making him the owner of over 10,000 acres of land. However, after the U.S. Government obtained control of California, it resurveyed the Mexican land grants. Vejar retained only 486 acres of his vast ranch, which he sold in 1864. In the following decades the ranch was sold many times and was further divided each time it changed hands. In 1918 Frederich E. Lewis bought most of the original Rancho Los Nogales and founded the Diamond Bar Ranch. The ranch and city were named after his registered brand, a diamond over a bar. By the 1950s, the landscape, rolling hills grazed by herds of cattle, had remained much the same since the foundation of Rancho Los Nogales. But in 1956 the Transamerica Corporation bought 8,000 acres of Brea Canyon and in 1960 they built the first model homes in Diamond Bar. On April 18, 1989 the city of Diamond Bar was incorporated.

Location

The city of Diamond Bar is located on 14.8 square miles of land of the picturesque hills and valleys in Brea Canyon. Within the city itself is an 18-hole golf course, a new community center, nine parks, a Little League center and several shopping centers that serve the community’s needs.

Schools

Diamond Bar’s public education is provided by two schools districts within the city, the Walnut Valley Unified School District and Pomona Unified School District. Walnut Valley Unified consistently surpasses state-wide testing standards making it one of the top ranked school districts in California year after year.
